Nurse Manager

The primary focus of the Nurse Manager will be to support the delivery of patient care by assisting the medical provider, Medical Staff providing care to our adult patients with substance abuse disorders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 *   Complete/assist with intake process on admissions consistent with the intake and assessment format for our Medically Monitored Intensive Inpatient Services.

  • Provide oversight and professional direction for 24 hour services for evaluations, observation, medical monitoring, addictions treatment and crisis stabilization.
    • Complete medical history and intake information and prepare clients residing at CFR for physical exam as soon as possible following admission.
  • Collaborate with referral sources regarding clients placed in the Medically Monitored Unit, whether for Substance Abuse Treatment Services, Co-Occurring Services, Gambling Services, or Crisis Stabilization Services in order to obtain the necessary information to treat each individual appropriately.

Supervision Duties:

     * Responsible for HR support of:  hiring, discipline/Performance Improvement Plans, performance evaluations, employee development, terminations, promotions and pay increases. Schedule and facilitate regular team  meetings.

  • Responsible for training/training program for new employees on unit(s) including guidelines, policies, processes and procedures; to ensure quality care is provided to all clients
  • Oversees/Creates schedule for staff on units.
  • Ensure quality of care by developing and interpreting agency’s philosophies, and standards of care; enforcing adherence to state board of nursing regulations, applicable pharmacy regulations, and residential regulations. 
  • Reports incidents, problems or accidents and any breach of client treatment protocol or confidentiality. 
  • Ensures staff’s documentation of client care is timely and accurate including medical providers.
  •  Ensures medication administration, storage procedures and controlled substance regulations are adhered to.
  • Monitors program activity to ensure expenses are adhering to the program budget including supply management.
  • Represents agency at meetings and on committees
  • Participate in quality assurance reviews as requested and in review of employee quality care delivery

Treatment Duties:

  • Give and chart medications accurately.
  • Review individual care plans for clients in care.
  • Responsible for delivery of treatment activities to clients as indicated by treatment plans that concern medical issues.
  • Maintain an adequate liaison with families and residents.
  • Provide services and complete Medical Orders for clients during each shift.  Make rounds regularly on each hour of each shift.
  • Conduct inspections of all admissions belongings to the Medically Monitored Intensive Inpatient Unit for contraband.
  • Chart all relevant information and pass it on to the person(s) relieving on the next shift.
  • Notify all referral sources when a residential client who has not been assigned a counselor leaves the Detoxification Unit or the Treatment Facility AMA or due to any other rules violation or noncompliance.
  • Notify the Residential Supervisor of the date of admission on any primary residential client who comes to the Unit via Substance Abuse Commitment procedures.
  • Administer and chart prescription and non-prescription medications per doctor’s orders; administer and chart residential and outpatient Antabuse.
  • Upon admission of a client, responsible for obtaining and sending releases of information to other treatment facilities, mental health units, doctors, and hospitals to gather pertinent information regarding client for counseling staff.
  • Complete all ISMART admission forms, discharge forms, and corresponding progress notes for clients utilizing the Medically Monitored Unit.  Complete necessary documentation for Substance Abuse Crisis Calls and the GTPS form for Problem Gambling Crisis Calls taken by nursing staff.

 OTHER DUTIES:

 Assist the Addiction Program Clinical Director, Counselors, Support Staff, Residential Program Supervisors, Outpatient Addiction Program Supervisors, and Executive Director concerning medical services.


  • Know Community & Family Resources’ rules and dress code.
  • Responsible for the operation and functioning of Community & Family Resources Medically Monitored Program in accordance with approved grant applications and contracts for services with the funding agency.
  • Responsible for participation in the total Quality Improvement Program Plan as outlined in the Plan and as directed by the Executive Director.
  • During the week during normal business hours, advise the Billing Technician of people who have insurance, including Medicaid, immediately so that pre-certification may be obtained, if required.  If pre-authorization is needed after hours, the nurse on duty at the time of admission should obtain the information necessary and complete the pre-authorization process.
  • Completing 6-month follow-ups on discharged Medicaid ONLY Clients.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Schedule : Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.

  • The staff member may experience traumatic situations including hostile clients and/or clients’ family members/responsible parties.
  • The ability to understand all policies and procedures and the ability to reference them from the agency’s manuals.
  • The ability to comply with the agency’s infection control policies and procedures including the Exposure Control plan which reflects OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to ensure a safe work environment for self and others.
  • Ensure the agency is operated in an efficient and cost-effective manner by adhering to the agency’s attendance policies.
  • The staff member may be required to work extended periods of time at a video display terminal (VDT).
  • May be required to meet with clients and/or other staff throughout the agency’s facilities.
  • The incumbent must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse with a current valid Iowa License to practice nursing. 
  • Will maintain current education regarding Behavioral Health Disorders, to include but not limited to Substance Use Disorders, Mental Health Disorders, and Gambling Disorders.
  • Administrative experience preferred.
